The Lathe of Heaven
1980 TV
Directed by David Loxton and Fred Barzyk, adapted from Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel, with Le Guin herself involved in casting, script planning, rewriting, and filming.

Circuitry Man
1990
Directed by Steven Lovy, a post-apocalyptic cyber-trash road movie where underground cities, polluted air, narcotic microchips, android romance, and Vernon Wells all share the same bad electrical bill.


The Transmission

This is a buried-world triple feature.

Not “space is the future.”
Not “the stars will save us.”
Nope.

This one says:

The future is underground.
The future is bureaucratic.
The future has condensation on the walls and someone coughing near a mainframe.

Transatlantic Tunnel is the old-world dream of engineering as destiny: men in suits and helmets deciding that if the ocean is in the way, civilization should simply punch a hole through it. It is progress as imperial plumbing.

The Lathe of Heaven is the dream curdled inward: the machine is no longer a tunnel, it is a sleeping human being. Reality itself becomes public infrastructure. One anxious man dreams, and the city zoning board of existence goes completely feral.

Circuitry Man is what happens after the grand promises rot into cable bundles. The air is poison, the cities are underground, the body is hackable, pleasure comes on chips, and the cyberpunk future has the texture of a gas station bathroom after midnight.
